soften with yoga

Move through the motions

Robin Wall Kimmerer

“Even a wounded world is feeding us. Even a wounded world holds us, giving us moments of wonder and joy. I choose joy over despair. Not because I have my head in the sand, but because joy is what the earth gives me daily and I must return the gift.”

Yoga is a practice that introduced me to the concept of sitting with whatever needs to move through me.

Giving yourself the space to feel can be truly confronting. And yet finding ways to stay soft, gentle and curious, can help you arrive at the somatic feeling of safety and acceptance those (e)motions are needing.

While I dipped my toes into almost every style and version of the practice out there, as my great teacher Bess Prescott puts it, the only yoga worth practicing is a yoga that is deeply engaged with the world.

Moving with me will hopefully let you show up for yourself in the way you need it, not as an end to itself, but as a means of forging the strength, clarity, and compassion needed to serve the world beyond the mat and your practice.

My teachers and mentors

  • Bess has been my main teacher and guide throughout most of my yoga training journey. Having co-founded Creature Yoga in Byron Bay, she now works under Bess Prescott Yoga, weaving together intelligent sequencing and subtle body practices with a deep reverence for critical study of yogic texts and history. While elements of Bess’ teachings have been foundational and are recognisable throughout my practice, it’s her courage to stand up for justice in the world that I am most grateful for getting to witness and learn from.

  • Brooklyn’s classes changed the way I approach my yoga practice. On the mat and beyond it, Brooklyn finds a subtle way for you to feel perfectly fit without having to use many words for it. The intentional style of teaching, rooted in her personal history and Maoritanga lineage, not only begun my own journey towards softening through movement, but truly create a space and energy that feels healing in and of itself for all that participate. Brooklyn has been my mentor in the beginning of my teaching journey, helping me connect with all that I am and can offer, without limiting myself to what the traditional and expected of a yoga teacher is.

  • Roshni was a pivotal mentor in helping me begin to examine the complexity and nuance of the historical and socio-political dimensions of yoga. It is through her work that I first learnt of the foundations of yoga being heavily influenced by vedic brahmanism, - a system of oppression, marginalising people at the lower end and outside the caste system.

Together with Bess, Roshni’s call to debrahmanise yoga has shaped my path with a deeper and more personal sense of purpose. Her teachings have helped me bridge the gap between this ancient practice and my own commitment to global social justice. In interrogating yoga through this lens, I’ve been pushed to show up to both practice and teaching with greater humility, intention, and a responsibility to centre and uplift those historically silenced or excluded.

  • No one makes yoga anatomy study as accessible as Bec does it. Bridging science and spirituality in a way that feels grounded and empowering, Bec’s embodied, trauma-aware and inclusive approach shaped the way I understand the human body.

  • Having practised since the late 1960s and taught for over thirty years — Rose brings a breadth of lived experience that feels both ancient and alive. Rose’s teachings have been a reminder that yoga is far more than the shapes we make. With decades of practice in philosophy, pranayama, meditation, and ritual, she transmits a depth of experience that is both grounding and expansive. From her I’ve learned to honour stillness as much as strength, and to hold space for students to discover their own inner steadiness.
